At the lower end of the esophagus is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) . Normally, the LES opens to allow food into the stomach and then closes to prevent stomach contents from moving backward. In GERD, the LES becomes weak or relaxes inappropriately, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus.
